The COVID-19 pandemic has indelibly changed the moviegoing experience. Now, we have the option to see many new films at home or in a theater.

But those who chose to see “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” in a local movie theater Friday were probably particularly glad they did.

Montclair actor Patrick Wilson, who stars in the film as paranormal investigator Ed Warren, surprised moviegoers at AMC Clifton Commons on the film’s opening night.

Wilson’s little pop-in was shared in the Instagram stories of the “The Conjuring” account Friday night. The movie is also available to watch on HBO Max for a month.

The actor didn’t have to go far from home to say hello and give an introduction to the film.

“I’m gonna surprise these fans who have no idea that I’m here,” Wilson said with a laugh. “It’s going to be fun!”

He posed for pictures with fans before entering a theater where people were getting ready to watch the movie. The actor was greeted with cheers.

“So I take it by your reaction that you’ve seen the ‘Conjuring’ movies before,” Wilson, 47, told the crowd.

“I’m so excited that you guys are back,” he said. “There’s nothing like being in the theater to watch a horror movie, am I right?”

Wilson stars in the latest “Conjuring” film alongside Jersey native Vera Farmiga as Lorraine Warren. The actor duo has been investigating cases of the macabre as Ed and Lorraine Warren since the first “Conjuring” movie in 2013, playing the real-life married couple from Connecticut who spent decades examining incidents involving hauntings and alleged demonic possession.

The Oscar-nominated Farmiga, who also plays Tony Soprano’s mother Livia Soprano in the upcoming “Sopranos” prequel movie “The Many Saints of Newark,” has even deeper Jersey roots than Wilson. The Clifton native and graduate of Hunterdon Central Regional High School grew up in a Ukrainian enclave in Irvington and attended St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church in Newark.

Wilson will reprise the role of Orm in “Aquaman 2,” due out in 2022, and is making his directorial debut with the upcoming fifth installment of the “Insidious” franchise, in which he will also star.

When the actor is not hunting demons with Farmiga or being in movies without becoming famous, he lives in Montclair with his wife, “Succession” actor Dagmara Domińczyk, and their children.

Like the other “Conjuring” movies that star Wilson and Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren, “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It,” which was delayed from a September 2020 release because of the pandemic, is based on a real-life story.

The Warrens investigated the case of David Glatzel, an 11-year-old boy in Connecticut who showed signs of demonic possession. A man named Arne Cheyenne Johnson, who was engaged to Glatzel’s older sister and lived with them, was charged with manslaughter after the 1981 stabbing death of his landlord, Alan Bono.

Johnson said he stabbed Bono because he was possessed by the same demons that plagued Glatzel. He said he had asked the devil to leave Glatzel’s body and enter him instead during an exorcism.

Johnson’s case was called the “Devil Made Me Do It” case because it was the first time in modern United States history that a murder suspect tried to use demonic possession as a defense, though a superior court judge rejected the idea. Johnson was released early from prison for good behavior in 1986 after serving a sentence of nearly five years.
