Over the weekend, The New York Times released a documentary about pop star Britney Spears and her career titled "Framing Britney Spears." The artist has been trending on social media for weeks under the hashtag "Free Britney."

According to The New York Times, Spears hasn’t been able to fully live her own life for 13 years, stuck in a court-sanctioned conservatorship. The documentary examines what the public might not know about the pop star’s court battle with her father for control of her estate.

While the film went in-depth about the ups and downs of her career, it also touched on Spears' relationship with fellow artist Justin Timberlake. A large takeaway from the documentary was that Timberlake played a huge role in Spears' plunge. The two had a very public breakup, and Timberlake pushed the narrative that Spears had cheated on him.

Spears and Timberlake dated for four years before splitting in 2002. The former NSYNC member would go on to write his hit "Cry Me a River," reportedly about Spears’ infidelity.

Across Twitter, fans seem to agree: it's time for Timberlake to answer for his crimes.

Many fans also called out Diane Sawyer, who interviewed Spears after the breakup and asked what she did wrong.

The documentary, which is airing on FX on Hulu, focuses on the people close to Spears and the lawyers tied to her conservatorship now as they reassess her phenomenal career and brutal downfall, as she battles her father in court over who should control her life.

The film managed to resurface a lot of disdain fans had for the former boy band leader, as he also played a role in the descent of Janet Jackson's career as well.

After the film was released, an article by US Weekly's Kathy Campbell was published Saturday claiming Spears holds no grudges against her ex-boyfriend. The documentary is currently available on FX on Hulu for streaming.
